Southwest Airlines just did the unthinkable: it axed its iconic “Bags Fly Free” policy after more than 50 years. As of May 28, 2025, passengers will now be charged $35 for the first checked bag and $45 for the second, aligning with fees charged by other major carriers like United and Delta.
📌 What Happened:
The new fees apply to most passengers, including those booking Basic, Wanna Get Away Plus, and Anytime fares.
Exceptions include Business Select passengers and A-List Preferred loyalty members, who will still receive two free checked bags. A-List members and Southwest credit card holders will receive one free checked bag.
The policy change is part of a broader shift in Southwest's business model, which also includes the introduction of basic economy fares and the planned transition to assigned seating in 2026.
🧠 The Bigger Picture:
This move is a significant departure from Southwest's long-standing commitment to customer-friendly policies. The airline had previously touted its free checked bags as a key differentiator in a competitive market. However, financial pressures and the need to align with industry standards have prompted this change.

💭 Final Thoughts:
While the end of the “Bags Fly Free” era may disappoint loyal customers, it's a reflection of the evolving airline industry landscape. As carriers seek new revenue streams and adapt to changing market dynamics, passengers can expect more such shifts in the future.
